Review: Sonic Forces (Nintendo Switch)

EDIT: I changed the scoring system to be x/10 and have updated the scores accordingly. It’s basically the same score though.
The pain has finally lessened, but the scars will always be there to remind me…of when I bought Sonic Forces. What was I thinking? I don’t know.

It was very late at night, I was hanging out on Discord as always. I had an apparent offer to buy the game for me. But no, I had to go and do something incredibly stupid.

I bought it myself.

Then…I played it.

I played it long enough to complete it.

And once it was over, once the horrible nightmare had ended. I immediately deleted it, live on stream.

I didn’t really have much experience with Sonic games, having only played the old Genesis games a couple times in the past. I had never played, much less bought (or even rented) a 3D Sonic.

But this game, this game I played at the same time as Super Mario Odyssey.

There is no comparison.

I’m too lazy to get a bunch of screen shots together so I’ll just use the one of the character creator I tweeted.

This, honestly, is the best part of the game. Making a character that makes people say “What the FUCK is that?” I didn’t spend that much time on it though, I wanted to just get this game over with.

Graphics

Graphically I wouldn’t call it the best looking game ever, but it looks fine for a Sonic game. It seems to run OK on Switch, I didn’t notice (or just don’t remember) any really bad frame drops or slowdown. Overall graphics weren’t the problem with the game.

Sound

Not a lot to say here, it’s a Sonic game. Expect cheesy voice acting and music. And if you’re as bad at video games as I am expect to hear it over and over and over and over again.

Controls

They’re OK I guess? I spent a lot of time just pressing B (I think) to dash between enemies, barely even paying attention. Sometimes I would swear I jumped in time and would die from falling off something. I don’t have any experience with other Sonic games to compare the controls to.

Gameplay

Here’s where the game really suffers…it’s just not that fun you know? It got (and this was also my fault for sucking but the point remains) rather grating to hear the same lines 30 times in a row because I couldn’t time a jump right.

When the best part of your game is the character creator, you should probably try to spend more time on the game itself rather than the engine it runs on.

Oh, and the story is silly but it’s a Sonic game so that’s no surprise.

Conclusion

I personally wouldn’t recommend this game, but I guess if you’re a Sonic super fan (or a real life version of Amy Kappa) maybe you’ll still be able to enjoy it. I’d say if you’re gonna buy it don’t pay full price.

AND DON’T TURN DOWN A FREE COPY THEN BUY IT AT FULL PRICE YOURSELF.

The game ends. You can make weird monstrosities in the avatar creator. ...It's not Sonic 06?

Everything else.
